We all grow up with fave meals from our childhood. Evening meals that you just can't wait to dig into after waiting for your mom to fix it. Meals that inspire sneaking a few nibbles before it's completely prepared. For me as a youngster my top meals were: stroganoff, sloppy joes, and spaghetti. When I was quite young my mom made stroganoff served with warm cornbread oozing with butter and honey on top....Oh man, that was the best! As I got a little bit older my mom became more health aware and the cornbread got axed. We still had stroganoff but no cornbread on the side.
About 10 days ago I decided to attempt making stroganoff from scratch. Completely from scratch! My mom always used a seasoning packet when making stroganoff. Which makes things a lot easier. I was set on trying to make the dish in a bit of a more elegant fashion than the traditional. It turned out well. We even ate two meals of the new styled stroganoff. However, it wasn't the same! It just didn't quite make the cut in my opinion! It was good! Lacked the same traditional flavor I remember as a kid though.
In the past I've also tried re-making sloppy joes by doing everything from scratch and the same result occurred...didn't quite satisfy! Good but not like my mom used to make it. Not like I grew up with! Not like the flavor that reminds me of my childhood.
There's just some things that can't be improved. Or perhaps they can be improved but there's no point. The flavors of my fave dishes growing up is still the way I want it to taste when I make those fave dishes now. Perhaps, spaghetti is the only dish from childhood I've slightly improved now as an adult. My mom always made in the microwave in a casserole dish, it was yummy but we always struggled with making sure it wasn't too dry when fully prepared. Now I make it all on the stove, it turns out more saucy...which is what I like! So with some meals mom's way of making it is truly the best way or at least the most familar way!
Sidenote: Here in TX cornbread is not served with honey. Until I came into the picture Brad hadn't known of anyone putting honey on cornbread. Does he like it now that he has been introduced to the yummy goodness of warm cornbread and sweet honey drizzled on top? No. Why? Because that's not how he grew up having cornbread. Cornbread has butter no need for honey in his opinon....and likely the opinion of many other Texans. Lol!
